Decision 2013: Ruling party rep. calling for end to ‘political upheavals=?UTF-8?B?4oCZIA==?=in Armenia

A senior member of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) has called for an end to 'political upheavals' in the country amid what is a continuing post-election standoff accompanied with street protests organized by the opposition and student activists.

Eduard Sharmazanov, a spokesman of the RPA and deputy speaker of parliament, on Thursday urged Raffi Hovannisian, the officially defeated candidate in the February 18 presidential election, to congratulate the winner, incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan.

"Such is the Western culture in which Raffi Hovannisian himself was raised," Sharmazanov told media, referring to the fact that Hovannisian was born and grew up in the United States.

The RPA representative also stressed that Hovannisian's post-election statements did not mention specific violations during the election but were rather emotionally charged.
