Current Yerevan mayor to top RPA list in Council of Elders elections

Current Yerevan mayor Taron Margaryan will top the list of candidates of the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) in the May elections to the city's Council of Elders, it emerged after last night's meeting of the ruling party's governing body.

At the meeting, said spokesman Eduard Sharmazanov, the RPA executive body discussed last week's presidential election, with reelected President Serzh Sargsyan calling it "the best election" in the history of Armenia.

He said no resignations were discussed at the meeting despite allegations that the ruling party planned a major reshuffle in the wake of the ballot in which its leader made a poorer-than-expected performance in certain areas of the country, in particular, in the Avan district of Yerevan where Margaryan's extended family hold sway.
