On Friday, members of the Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs and of the Standing Committee on European Integration visited the Yerevan-Kentron penitentiary. The detainees and arrestees are in much better conditions in the Yerevan-Kentron penitentiary than in the Nubarashen penitentiary, Elinar Vardanyan, Chairwoman of the Standing Committee on Protection of Human Rights and Public Affairs, Parliament of Armenia, told Tert.am."The rooms are well lit up and air-conditioned. They are not overcrowded like the Nubarashen prison cells," she added."Our aim is to examine the conditions in penitentiaries before holding public hearings of the conditions of life-termers in Armenia. The hearings are scheduled for November 20," Ms Vardanyan said. Some of the MPs visited three life-termers – Nairi and Karen Hunanyan, and a young man – at the Yerevan-Kentron penitentiary. The young man complained that the one-time long visits to life-termers are actually too short – no more than three hours.
