The Armenian opposition has proved it has no support in the regions to ensure a sufficient number of votes for its representatives participating in the local self-government polls, a parliament member has said.
At a news conference on Friday, the leader of the Constitutional Right party, Hayk Babukhanyan, noted that the opposition has proposed very few candidate in the regions.
"The opposition alliance Armenian National Congress has nominated no candidate; the Heritage has only one, and only Dashnaksutyun is a little active, having nominated 26 candidates, which I don't think is enough," he said, noting that 320 communities across Armenia are going to elect governors in September.
Commenting on the ANC's passiveness, he said the dynamics observed ahead of the May parliamentary polls still continues.
"Ter-Petrosyan would gather a [a crowd of] 10-15 people in the regions in the course of campaign, and we learned today that the trend continues today," he added.
By not running for election, the ANC demonstrated its indifference to regional problems, the politician believes.
"The ANC's only goal is to gain power by all means and do what they used to do in the 1990s when they were at the helm of state," he said. "They are not absolutely interested in the problems there because it is hard work. They don't want to work or take any pains."
