The Metsamor Nuclear Power Plant will continue operation beyond September 1, 2016, after a decision approved by the Government on April 19.
The future of the plant – which was constructed in 1970 – had included plans to have the plant de-commissioned. However, a delay in construction of a new power unit has necessitated continuing with the current structure.
Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan said the government has asked the International Atomic Energy Agency for assistance to extend the service life of the NPP and such help has been extended following a recent visit to Armenia by IAEA officials.
