The Georgian opposition needs Germany’s support to normalize its relations with Russia, the leader of the country’s Free Democrats party has said.
In an interview with Alia newspaper, Irakli Alasania, who was formerly Georgia’s permanent representative to the United Nations, said he views Germany as a principal strategic ally for his country.
His comments came ahead of the Georgian opposition’s meeting with German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle.
“We must turn Germany and the European Union into a powerful weapon to normalize our relations with Russia,” he said.
The Georgian opposition activists are to meet Westerwelle on March 15 in Tbilisi. The German official is also expected to have meetings with President Mikheil Saakashvili and his Georgian counterpart, Grigol Vashadze.
