Armenian athletes lift, wrestle and dribble it

Armenia saw its weightlifters and hand-to-hand fighters win medals at international competitions at the end of last week as well as footballers in domestic league completing another day of their local rivalry.

On Sunday, the last day of the 2011 European Weightlifting Championships in Kazan, Russia, Hripsime Khurshudyan of Armenia won a silver medal with a steady performance in her +75kg weight division, yielding the top position to Russian Tatyana Kashirina who set a world record on her unimpeded way to the European title.

Khurshudyan's medal was an addition to the collection of two silver and one bronze medals earlier won by Armenian weightlifters at the championships (in both men's and women's competitions). Team Armenia placed fifth in the nations' standings, behind Russia, Turkey, Moldova and Belarus (the last two won one goal medal each, while Armenia didn’t). In sambo (a martial art and hand-to-hand fighting system) Armenian athletes won two silver and five bronze medals in three different weight categories (including one by a female fighter) at the European Youth and Junior Championships in the Czech capital of Prague, reported the Armenian Federation of Sambo (www.sambo.am).

Meanwhile, in the domestic football league Ulysses retained their leadership with a Round 5 victory against Ararat 3-0. Champion Pyunik beat Gyumri's Shirak in Yerevan 1-0 to stay three points behind Ulysses and a point behind second-placed Gandzasar (Kapan) that beat Mika 1-0. In the other weekend league game Impuls (Dilijan) beat Banants 1-0. (See more information and results at the Football Federation's website www.ffa.am)

In amateur boxing Armenian and Kazakh fighters became winners of an international tournament held in Yerevan last week.

In the finals of the Gagik Tsarukyan Tournament on April 16, in the 60-kg weight class Armenia's Vladimir Sarukhanyan gained a 20:16 victory over Gani Zhailaunov of Kazakhstan. And Artur Khachatryan (w/c 75) beat Ukrainian Alexander Galzulya 18:14.

Kazakh athletes prevailed over Armenians in the 69-kg and 91-kg weight classes, as well as in the heavyweight division.
