RPA Spokesman: No reason for current mayor not to head party list in next Yerevan elections

The ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) has not yet discussed its list of candidates for the May elections to the Yerevan Council, but it sees no reason why the current mayor should not top the slate, according to RPA spokesman Eduard Sharmazanov.

"The current team has worked decently in recent years, and Taron Margaryan has a fairly high prestige as mayor. This team is capable of solving numerous problems," said Sharmazanov, reports News.am.

Speculation about Margaryan's political future mounted in the wake of last week's presidential election in which incumbent President Serzh Sargsyan had a poorer-than-expected performance, in particular, in the Avan and Nor-Nork districts of Yerevan where the mayor and his extended family hold sway.
