The greater involvement of the younger generation of politicians and journalists in the current Armenian election campaign would suppose a certain change of attitudes towards the democratic process, but most political observers still see little change as compared to the last parliamentary vote in 2007.
The campaign ahead of the May 6 elections has now entered its third week, but so far there has been no head-to-head debates on TV between any of the candidates running for parliament either on the lists of one of the nine political forces or in individual single-member constituencies. Yet, several candidates have tried to invite their opponents to such discussions that would prove the first televised election debate in Armenia since 2003 when the then incumbent president Robert Kocharyan and his challenger Stepan Demirchyan debated live on TV ahead of the presidential runoff.
