Rome-bound: Alitalia to begin service from Armenia

One of Europe's major air companies Alitalia – Italy's National Airline – has announced it will begin service from Armenia's Zvartnots International Airport December 11, with direct flights from Yerevan to Rome. Rome-Yerevan flights will be offered Tuesdays and Fridays, with Yerevan-Rome flights Wednesdays and Saturdays. The company believes the new flight will strengthen its position in the Caucasus, where it also operates Rome-Tbilisi-Rome flight.

Round-trip tickets are expected to cost 299 euros (about $380) for the four-hour flights.

During today's press conference at the airport Alitalia's general manager for Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, Georgia and Armenia Giovanni Simonini responded to recent speculation that his company intends to buy Armenia's national carrier, Armavia. Armavia has had chronic problems paying service fees at Zvartnots and has occasionally been grounded.
