Market competition now poor in Armenia

Market competition is not so poor in Armenia despite numerous problems, Artak Shaboyan, Chairman of the State Commission for the Protection of Economic Competition, told journalists on Thursday.As to how many of the monopolized markets have new economic entities now, Shaboyan said that Armenian laws do not prohibit market dominance."Not only Armenian laws, but also laws throughout the world do not impose such restrictions. We are struggling against market dominance abuse. As regards market concentration, it has its objective reasons," Shaboyan said. Among them are the country's small territory, narrow market, border problems and other factors.The commission has inspected 8 or 19 markets this year, with most of them showing average market concentration, and some high market concentration."Downward tendencies in market concentration have been noticed. High concentration was registered in the sausage, beverage and pasta markets," Shaboyan said.   Read more... (144 words)
