Armenia is the only country that still operates a consulate in the Syrian city of Aleppo that has been one of the flashpoints of the ongoing civil war in this Middle Eastern country in recent months, said Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian during a meeting with lawmakers on Monday.
"It is important for Syria-based Armenians to know that our diplomatic representation is operating not only in Damascus, but also Aleppo and is ready to offer help," said Nalbandian, stressing that Armenian diplomats continue their work in the city despite the "life-threatening situation" there.
Up to three quarters of Syria's 80,000-strong ethnic Armenian community lived in Aleppo, the largest city and main economic center of Syria, by the time an internal conflict broke out in the country in March 2011.
