Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, the president of international chess's governing body, FIDE, has come up with an idea of organizing chess tournaments in disputed areas, including in Nagorno-Karabakh.
"There is a high wall at the Arab-Israeli border. I suggest placing thousands of chess tables and holding a children's chess tournament at the still-unfinished section of the construction," said Ilyumzhinov, as quoted by Russian media.
The FIDE president added that he had already discussed the idea with Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas and that the Israeli leadership did not oppose it either.
"A similar tournament might be held in Nagorno-Karabakh as well, with Armenian and Azerbaijani children participating. Chess games perform a peacekeeping mission," Ilyumzhinov stressed.
