Azerbaijan to ensure Armenian chess players security

Azerbaijan has pledged to ensure the security of the Armenian chess players expected to participate in the 2016 Chess Cup and the 2016 World Chess Olympiad.
According to Trend News Agency, an agreement on holding the above sporting events in the country was signed today by President of the World Chess Federation (FIDE) Kirsan Ilyumzhinov, President of Azerbaijani Chess Federation Elman Rustamov and Minister of Youth and Sports of Azerbaijan, Azad Rahimov.
“We are ready to receive chess players from Armenia; all security issues will be addressed at the appropriate level. This is not the first contest with the participation of Armenian sportsmen in Azerbaijan, "Rahimov was quoted as saying.
A FIDE presidential council, set to take place in Yerevan from 18 until 20 January, 2013, will focus on the necessary security measures, Ilyumzhinov said.
Commenting on a proposal for conducting an Armenian-Azerbaijani junior championship in Nagorno-Karabakh, the Azerbaijani official said his country would support such an initiative provided all the guests from Azerbaijan are given security guarantees and freedom to participate in the competitions.
