Helsinki Citizens=?UTF-8?B?4oCZIA==?=Assembly demands Armenian MP=?UTF-8?B?4oCZ?=s prosecution

The Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor Office demands that Armenia's Prosecutor General Aghvan Hovsepyan present a petition to Armenia's parliament for stripping Ruben Hairapetyan of his parliamentary immunity. The office condemns the violence Ruben Hairapetyan used against the monitor Arman Veziryan near the Harsnaqar restaurant on July 8, 2012. It was a manifestation of overt cynicism and disregard for public opinion. The incident happened on July 8, on the seventh day of doctor Vahe Avetyan’s tragic death, when people held a peaceful demonstration near the Harsnaqar restaurant complex owned by Ruben Hairapetyan. The Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor Office views the incident as a result of inadequate response to the violence against Vahe Avetyan and his friends by Armenia's political authorities and police, namely:failure to make a political assessment of the tragic incident by the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA);law-enforcers' failure to id entify all the persons involved in the incident;Considering the above, the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly Vanadzor Office demands that Armenia's Prosecutor General Aghvan Hovsepyan present a petition to Armenia's parliament for stripping Ruben Hairapetyan of his parliamentary immunity to bring criminal charges against him. Also, on the basis of Article 70 of Armenia's Constitution, Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan must convene a special meeting of Armenia's parliament to discuss the Prosecutor General's petition.
