Cholera outbreak reaches Cuba

A cholera outbreak in Cuba has killed at least 15 people and sent hundreds more to hospitals, USA Today reported, citing El Nuevo Herald.The island nation’s first cholera outbreak in a century is jamming up area hospitals and creating chaos as the disease continues to spread, according to the paper.Yoandris Montoya, who lives in Cuba, was quoted as telling El Nuevo Herald that there were “1,000-plus cases” in the country’s southeastern province of Granma.Montoya and others say security agents have locked down the city’s hospitals to stop news of the outbreak from getting out.Cuba’s Public Health Ministry said Tuesday it had “controlled” an outbreak of cholera that had killed three people and affected 50 others in Granma province, the paper reports. However, unofficial reports Friday indicated that the disease was continuing to spread.At least 15 people have died from the disease, wrote Havana-based journalist Calixto R. Marti nez in a report for blog CafĂ© Fuerte. He gathered his information from residents and health workers in the region, he said.
