Armenia raises minimum marriage age for women to 18

The Armenian government on Thursday decided to raise from 17 to 18 years the minimum age at which women in the country are allowed to marry.

In providing the reasoning for such an amendment to the Family Code, Justice Minister Hrayr Tovmasyan cited both legal and educational factors.

The minimum marriageable age for men in Armenia is 18 years and, therefore, the minister argued that allowing women to get married at an earlier age amounts to gender-based discrimination.

"International structures have been urging us to ensure gender equality [in marriage regulation]," Tovmasyan said at the government meeting.
