The kiosks that provoked months of protest and disturbance in Yerevan's Mashtots Park have been dismantled, with promise of "greening" the park in the coming days.
The small free-standing shopping booths had been a flashpoint of protest led by environmentalists who argued that placing them in the park was a violation of law, as no public discussion had been held on the matter.
On May 1, five days before parliamentary elections swept by his party, President Serzh Sargsyan paid an unannounced visited to the park along with Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan. The president ordered the mayor to dismantled the kiosks, on the grounds that they were unattractive.
