War Chest: Azerbaijan increases military spending by 89 percent in 2011

According to a report by the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, Azerbaijan increased its military budget by 89 percent last year, the biggest increase worldwide.

"The dramatic growth came in the middle of increasing warnings of renewed conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh," the report reads.

Worldwide, military spending was practically cut off in 2011, growing only 0.3 percent.

The report found that the United States led all nations, spending $711 billion, with China second ($114 billion) and Russia third ($71.9 billion).

By this index Armenia is the 11th in the world. Experts at the Stockholm center say in 2008-2011 military expenses in the country increased by some 8 percent.
