Scores go missing as Bangladesh ferry sinks

Scores of people are missing after a ferry with some 200 people aboard sunk in a river in southern Bangladesh.

Citing police sources, BBC News reported that 35 people were rescued after the accident in the Meghna River, south-west of the capital Dhaka.

Unconfirmed reports say the Shariatpur-1 hit by a small oil tanker.

“About 35 passengers were rescued by another ferry. But more than 150 passengers remain unaccounted for,” local police chief Shahidul Islam was quoted as telling the AFP news agency.

The ferry was reportedly travelling to Dhaka from the Shariatpur district.

Most ferry accidents in the country are blamed on poor safety standards and overcrowding.
