A district electoral commission in capital Yerevan has refused to register businessman politician Khachatur Sukiasyan as a candidate for the May 6 parliamentary election.
The decision to reject Sukiasyan was made based on a March 15 notice by the Passports and Visa Department of the Police.
Sukiasyan was nominated by the opposition Armenian National Congress (ANC).
At a session earlier today, the commission registered the politician’s brother, Saribek Sukiasyan, and two other candidates, Garegin Nushikyan and Gagik Shahnazaryan.
The police had earlier submitted a report confirming that Sukiasyan permanently resided in Armenia in the past five years.
Speaking to Tert.am, the rejected candidate’s lawyer, Ara Zohrabyan, said they are planning to appeal against the electoral district’s decision.
