New Speaker: Nikoyan takes over second-highest position in Armenia

The new (third) speaker of the fourth National Assembly of independent Armenia is republican Samvel Nikoyan. On Tuesday, in closed voting, Nikoyan received the overwhelming majority of votes (102 votes out of 106).

Larisa Alaverdyan, as Heritage described, the "alternative" candidate of Heritage Party, received four votes.

On Monday, Heritage Party surprisingly put up its candidate. The other parliamentary opposition faction – Armenian Revolutionary Federation (ARF, 'Dashnaktsutyun'), stated earlier that it would put up no candidate.

On Monday, Heritage Party leader Raffi Hovannisian stated that by announcing Alaverdyan's candidacy, Heritage wants "to tell the counterparts of the ruling party and common citizens that any Armenian, any citizen is able to create an alternative not only today and tomorrow, but also during electoral processes and in general."
