“Political chess=?UTF-8?B?4oCd?=: Are government and opposition moving closer to dialogue?

The need for political dialogue from time to time pops up as a key issue for political discussions in Armenia. Such discussions have been particularly topical in the past several weeks ever since opposition leader Levon Ter-Petrosyan announced his Armenian National Congress (ANC) intended to play a "chess game" with the government, thus implying a sequence of reciprocal moves.

Such a "move" from the government came on Wednesday when President Serzh Sargsyan told top prosecutors and security officials to step up their efforts in investigating the 2008 post-election unrest, thus admittedly meeting one of the three major preconditions of the ANC "for the conception of dialogue". (Some argue that authorities have made considerable "progress" in "meeting" the other two demands of the Ter-Petrosyan camp that included the release of all jailed opposition members and permission to stage unimpeded rallies in Liberty Square, a largely symbolic venue for political gatherings believed to be the cradle of Armenia's 1988 liberation movement).
