A man was arrested in Barcelona Tuesday for allegedly setting a fire at the famous Sagrada Familia cathedral, local police said.
According to People’s Daily Online, the fire was extinguished before it could do more than damaging some furnishings at the popular tourist site. Around 1,500 tourists had to be evacuated, and four workers were taken to hospital for inhaling smoke.
The suspected arsonist was caught by tourists and later taken away by police. Joan Rigol, president of the Patrimony of the Sagrada Familia, described him as “disturbed.”
Construction of Sagrada Familia, an incomplete masterpiece of famous architect Antoni Gaudi and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, began in the early 1880s.
