Renowned Turkish painter Bedri Baykam was stabbed in Istanbul on Monday, the Turkish media said.
He was reportedly assaulted after a meeting on the demolition of the Monument to Peace and Humanity.
Witnesses said an unknown individual aged between 30 and 35 stabbed Baykam in the abdomen in front of the Akatalar cultural center and later fled in a vehicle. The wounded artist asked drivers for help but the latter declined to do anything. After a short while he was hospitalized.
An investigation has been launched.
Baykam was reportedly preparing to organize a march to Kars with a group of friends on April 23 as a sign of protest against the Kars Municipality’s decision to tear down the monument symbolizing the Armenian-Turkish friendship.
Dogan reported later that Baykam’s assistant Tugba Kurtulmush was assaulted too. The injured woman was immediately hospitalized in an ambulance. No details about her health condition have been reported.
Doctors say Baykam’s life is out of danger. The artist said in hospital they will continue their struggle.
The sculptor of the monument, Mehmet Aksoy, made a statement in this connection .
“We are concerned over the incident. I tthink it was a planned attack,” he said.
