Overcrowded kindergartens in Yerevan have become a concern for working parents who worry whether their children are receiving proper care, but for lack of choice have enrolled their children.
By state policy, the number of children in a kindergarten group should not exceed 25-30; however, some kindergartens according to parent estimates have more than 50.
As of this year, there are 161 public kindergartens in Yerevan with a total of 21,889 children. Parents pay 4,000-10,000 drams ($11-27) monthly fee depending on the kindergarten. Prices for private facilities, where overcrowding is not an issue, are 10 times as much.
Kindergartens in the outskirts of the city, however have an opposite problem with very few children attending, so directors have to group children of different age-groups into one.
