PAP – political corpse, Robert Kocharyan political ghost – expert

The post-election developments in Armenia gave an opportunity to understand where the political ghosts and corpses are, director of the Regional Studies Center (RSC) Richard Giragosian told the reporters today. He said it appeared that Prosperous Armenia party is a political corpse while Armenia's second president is a political ghost.

"The political ghost is Robert Kocharyan and political corpse is the PAP," he said, adding that the PAP has essentially weakened.

Giragosian said Heritage party leader Raffi Hovannisian's step to meet with the PAP leader was smart but it was wrong for the PAP. "Mr Hovannisian's meeting with Serzh Sargsyan and the engagement of all political forces in the process was good. But for the PAP, the meeting with him and the statement made afterwards was more a result of despair," he said.

The analyst said when the PAP is doing everything for just show off, to demonstrate that it exists politically, but in reality it has appeared in bad situation as it is neither an opposition, nor a pro-governmental force.

"It has no place to go and has become weak. Nothing serious should be expected from this meeting. But it was a clever step by Raffi Hovannisian," he said.

The analyst said Serzh Sargsyan's meeting with Raffi Hovannisian was of greater significance. "It was a new political tradition, more civilized and respectful which somehow raised the political level. It was a challenge for President Sargsyan as for the first time he met with contender, shook his hand," Giragosian said.
