Ex-candidate arrested in connection with assassination attempt against fellow contender

Vardan Sedrakyan, a controversial former presidential candidate, has been taken into two-month custody in an ongoing investigation connected with an assassination attempt against a fellow contender in the recent race, Paruyr Hayrikyan.

Hayrikyan, a Soviet-era dissident running for president, was attacked and wounded amid an ongoing presidential campaign, on January 31, in an apparent murder attempt allegedly staged by two persons, who later were tracked down by law-enforcement bodies and proved to have had links with Sedrakyan. Both men were reportedly Sedrakyan's neighbors and one of them had also been hired by the former candidate for renovating a summer house.
