Armenian human rights champion challenges Obama on Sargsyan congratulation

Artur Sakunts, a leading Armenian human rights activist, has sent a letter to U.S. President Barack Obama, challenging his position on the February presidential election which is being disputed by the local opposition.

Sakunts, who heads the Vanadzor office of the Helsinki Citizens' Assembly, claimed that by congratulating his Armenian counterpart Serzh Sargsyan on his disputed reelection, President Obama has shouldered immediate responsibility for "electoral fraud".

"You assume direct responsibility for electoral fraud by congratulating those who have rigged the election and who bear direct responsibility for human rights violations, systemized, organized violations, the destruction of democratic values," wrote Sakunts, who monitored the February 18 vote in Armenia as an observer and reported numerous violations during its conduct.
