Armenian Ombudsman: Police must provide objective data on vote violations

Armenia's Human Rights Defender Karen Andreasyan said on Tuesday that Monday's presidential elections cannot be judged as trustworthy unless law-enforcement bodies release objective data on the number of violation alerts received during the voting.

Andreasyan specified violations such as bribes, double- voting, ballot stuffing, pressure on committee members during the votes counting and falsification during vote counting.

"The police should make public the reasons why an alert is considered reasonable or unreasonable. It is also of crucial importance to find out and provide the public with the explanation of why the work of "GALA" TV site was interrupted on the voting day. It is necessary to reveal all the cases of pressure on journalists and observers as well as the obstacle to their work", reads the Ombudsman's statement. "The unreliable work of the police may cast a shadow on all positive achievements of these elections. Thus, the responsibility for the public trust and the overall assessment of the elections is on police."
