Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan used unusually strong terms on Monday to condemn some practices in the state prosecution system that he said were immoral.
During a meeting with senior representatives of the law-enforcement system at the Prosecutor-General's Office Sargsyan discussed the conduct of criminal investigations in Armenia. While noting some progress in the activities of prosecutors, the head of state made it clear that isolated cases of prosecutors covering up crimes, fabricating charges against innocent people and committing other serious abuses cast a shadow on the entire system.
The president specifically praised efforts in Armenia's "cooperation with international agencies in money laundering and trafficking control" – a reference that many will no doubt connect to the prosecution of former Minister of Foreign Affairs Vartan Oskanian, a Sargsyan political rival. Generally, however, Sargsyan reprimanded the office of the top law enforcement.
