Heritage party leader accepts EPP's observer mandate

The leader of the opposition Heritage party, Raffi Hovhannisyan, has received a mandate to become an observer member of the European People’s Party (EPP).

Speaking at the EPP’s 20th Congress in Marseilles, France, the leader of the Party, Wilfried Martens, said he had handed the Heritage leader a badge symbolizing the observer status.

An official decision is due in February 2012.

According to the Heritage party’s press office, Hovhannisyan has had separate meetings with Martens and other officials, including EP President Jerzy Buzek, Mayor of Marseilles Jean-Claude Gaudin, as well as presidents, prime ministers and lawmakers of European countries, and EPP leaders.

The ruling coalition parties – the Republican, Prosperous Armenia and Rule of Law – have also applied to EPP for observer status.
