Armenian athletes participating in the World Sambo Championships in Minsk, Belarus, have won three medals, including one silver, reports the Sambo Federation of Armenia.
At the competitions that ended on Sunday Vachik Vardanyan (68 kg, combat sambo) reached the final, in which he lost to a Russian opponent and eventually finished in second place. Tigran Kirakosyan (52 kg, sport sambo) and Mkhitar Mkhitaryan (52 kg, combat sambo) won bronze medals.
A total of 11 Armenian fighters took part in the Championships.
Sambo, a Russian acronym for unarmed self-defense, is a hand-to-hand fighting system first developed by the Red Army in the 1920s. This martial art and combat sport is now popular particularly among former Soviet and Eastern Bloc countries.
