The son of Gyumri's former mayor Vardan Ghukasyan, who had been wanted over his possible involvement in a shooting incident in Armenia's second largest city since August, was found over the weekend due to "corresponding actions by police", local media reported, quoting police sources.
The incident near a café in downtown Gyumri on August 24 happened amid a mayoral election campaign in the city before which the longtime city head, Ghukasyan, appeared to have been pressured by his party not to run for office again. Ghukasyan resigned in October about a month ahead of time after the election of the new mayor the previous month. Media reports linked the incident to the elections.
