Joining the Fray: Heritage Party leader announces presidential bid

Opposition Heritage Party leader Raffi Hovannisian has announced his intention to contest next year's presidential election.

"I declare today my nomination in the upcoming presidential election," the 52-year-old United States-born politician said at a press conference on Friday.

"I am doing this as a citizen of the Republic of Armenia who has the will and feels his share of responsibility for today's situation and wants to participate in overcoming this situation," stressed Hovannisian, who was not eligible to contest previous presidential elections in Armenia over his failure to meet the 10-year citizenship requirement.

Hovannisian, who served as independent Armenia's first foreign minister in 1991-1992, founded the Heritage party in 2002 with which he twice entered parliament in the 2007 and 2012 elections. He renounced his parliament seat in September with an apparent intention to prepare his presidential bid.
