Ex-Georgian minister jailed

A former Georgian minister of defense, Bacho Akhalaya, has been jailed for a preliminary period of two months based on a ruling by the Tbilisi City Court.
A correspondent of the Russian Vzglyad in Tbilisi said that he has been moved to Tbilisi's Gldansk prison which came under spotlight in September for reported violence and rape cases against the inmates. The scandal forced Akhalaya out of office, causing him to spend several months abroad.
The Georgian authorities reportedly promise to take care that the former official is treated with respect in prison.
Georgy Kalandadze, tհe chief of the Georgian armed forces joint headquarters, quit the isolation ward last week after paying a bail of 20,000 Georgian Laris ($12,000).
