Many vacationers off to Sevan for a bracingly cold dip in the mountain lake should know that most of the beaches along the shore have been either fully or partially public for a few years now.
In fact, according to the 2008 law, only 20% of the beachfront can be leased to private operators at any one time.
This means that everyone has free access to the lake everywhere else.
Ashot Avalyan, from the Ministry of the Environment, advises citizens spending time at Sevan to be aware of their rights and to defend them if confronted by unscrupulous operators who illegally try to have bathers pay for shore access.
