Armenian journalist concerned over misinformation on Armenian community in Syria

The Armenians from Aleppo, as well as experts, do not give accurate information on Syria and Syrian-Armenians, Arman Babajanyan, Editor of the Zhamanak daily and 1in.am, told journalists on Wednesday.He has just returned from Aleppo.Problems are obvious in Syria as the country is at war. However, the local Armenian community is facing serious problems as well."The community is in fear. The general opinion is that leaving the community would be treacherous," he said."They think that Armenians in Armenia are against Syrian Armenians coming to Armenia. They say 'we are Armenians, do not we have the right to come to our Homeland in this situation?'" Babajanyan said. The community leaders and nationalists are providing this information to Syrian-Armenians.The community leaders are doing their utmost to preserve the Armenian community. One of the reasons is that the community's further existence is a necessary for preserving the property, church and wealth.Armenia� ��s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Ministry of Diaspora are insufficient. Armenia's priority task must be to decide on whether the state needs the Armenian community in Syria or not."If it needs, why are we bringing Syrian Armenians here and spending money on it? We had better direct the funds there," Babajanyan said.According to him, people in Syria are losing hope that the country will ever recover. "Aleppo was a powerful center, but most of the city's plants have been destroyed. This means that unemployment will be the major problem during the next few years," he said.   Read more...
