Armenian citizens to be fined unless reporting about their whereabouts

According to the new law on administrative violations, entered into force from June 1, 2012, Armenian citizens leaving the country for more than 6 months should inform where they are, otherwise they will be fined 3,000 drams.

Ex human rights defender Larisa Alaverdyan said there is nothing extraordinary in it. "No one is going to fine a person for being outside of the country. Those citizens will be fined who will not inform an Armenian diplomatic representation about being absent from the republic," she told Tert.am.

She said the law has been worked out in 2011 aimed at specifying the voters list during the elections.

"A citizen, being outside of the Republic, should orally or in a written form inform Armenian diplomatic body that he/she stays in that city. It will help to specify the number of Armenia's population during the elections," she said.

Larisa Alaverdyan said the law does not violate human rights.
