Ruling party lawmaker resigns amid Harsnakar uproar

Ruben Hayrapetyan, a lawmaker with the ruling Republican Party of Armenia (RPA) and head of the Football Federation, has announced his resignation as member of parliament following days of public protests over an incident in the restaurant owned by his extended family in which a military doctor was beaten to death.

Hayrapetyan has all along insisted he had no knowledge or any involvement in the brutal beating of three men, one of whom, 33-year-old Vahe Avetian, died in hospital late last week without regaining consciousness for 12 days. Six people, including some of the Harsnakar restaurant's security personnel, are under arrest now as the police probe into the case continues.
