Opposition paper editor protests way of dropping case against him, demands action against ‘fake victim=?UTF-8?B?4oCZ?=

Hayk Gevorgyan, the editor-in-chief of the Haykakan Zhamanak daily, has appealed the decision of the investigation officer to drop the criminal case filed against him earlier this year on hit-and-run charges.

Earlier this year Gevorgyan was accused of running over a citizen, Ashot Frangulyan, and escaping the scene. Gevorgyan insisted that he was framed by the police in retaliation for his critical writing as a journalist and that his car did not even have any contact with the alleged victim who, rather, faked his injuries.

On June 20, the officer in charge of the investigation decided to close the case "for lack of evidence". Meanwhile, Gevorgyan insists that the case should have been dropped "for lack of constituent elements of crime". The journalist, who was briefly arrested over the charge in February, also believes the police should pursue a case against Frangulyan for giving false testimony.
