For Science: State program started to encourage ideas and excellence

The state program on supporting young scientists has begun in Armenia. Scientists under 39 years old can submit their bids to participate in the program in four categories expecting to get up to 400,000 drams (about $1,000) financial support.

The management body of the program which consists of nine people will examine the scientists' bids and on the 28th day of each month will announce the names of the winners.

The government of Armenia will assign 100 million drams (about $ 250,000) for each year. This decision was made late last year, when President of Armenia Serzh Sargsyan met young scholars and discussed the problems they were concerned about. Public initiative "We Demand Increasing the Funds for Science" was activated in Armenia exactly that time, when young scientists were voicing their concerns over low salaries and limited funds assigned for scientific projects. (The average monthly salary for young scientists in Armenia is 60,000 drams — about $147).
