The European Union is concerned about the increased tension on the Line of Contact between Armenian and Azerbaijani troops, an EU envoy to Azerbaijan has said.
“The European Union is concerned about the increased tension on the Line of Contact, about the casualties and anything we can is to try to encourage people to go to the negotiating table rather than using military power in order to shoot at each other,” Trend.az quoted Ambassador Roland Kobia, the head of the EU Office in Baku, as telling reporters.
According to the diplomat, the EU is proposing to confidence building measures between the two nations for moving ahead with Karabakh conflict settlement.
“What I want to say is to bring my condolences to the families and relatives of the people who died and the people of Azerbaijan. I know that this is sad for the whole country,” he added.
Addressing the recent borderline incidents, NATO Liaison Officer in South Caucasus Region William Lahue expressed hope that the recent armed attacks will not destabilize the region.
"Unfortunately there have been tensions and incidents on the Contact Line between the Azerbaijani and Armenian troops", the European official said, according to APA news agency. "We hope that the situation will not lead to destabilization of the region"
Lahue added that the North Atlantic alliance supported Azerbaijan's territorial integrity: "But Nato doesn't participate in the negotiations on the settlement of Nagorno Karabakh conflict. We support the OSCE Minsk Group's efforts towards it," he was quoted as saying.
