At least six suicides have been committed in Armenia by mostly middle-aged citizens since the beginning of this week in what appear to be unrelated circumstances but an alarming pattern.
One of the most shocking of these incidents was reported in Yerevan's Erebuni district where a man and his son were found hanged in their apartment on Tuesday morning.
Police identified the victims of what they said was a double suicide as 62-year-old Petros Galustov and his 30-year-old son Artash Galstyan. A cross and an image of Jesus Christ were found near the dead men and the father also reportedly had a suicide note, the content of which has not been disclosed yet. According to media reports, Artash Galstyan had been released from the Nubarashen prison just days before the incident. In November 2011 together with another person he broke into a car belonging to a large company and stole 56 million drams (about $135,000).
