Chess: Aronian finishes fifth in Tal Memorial blitz; main tournament starts today

Armenian grandmaster Levon Aronian finished fifth in a blitz tournament ahead of the prestigious Mikhail Tal Memorial event in Moscow, Russia, to be played through June 19.

The blitz on June 7 also served as a sort of draw to decide the pairs in each of the nine rounds of the 10-man tournament beginning on Friday.

Thus, in Round 1 Aronian's opponent will be Hikaru Nakamura from the United States. Among other leading grandmasters taking part in the tournament are FIDE's current number one Magnus Carlsen (Norway), Russia's Vladimir Kramnik, Azerbaijan's Teimour Radjabov and others.

The total prize fund of Tal Memorial in 2012 is €100,000 (about $125,000), with €30,000 going to the winner.
