Armenian Casualty in Syria

A Syrian soldier of Armenian descent, Jalal Melkun, 20, has been reportedly killed near Homs in the ongoing civil war there.

Melkun becomes the third Syrian-Armenian serviceman reported killed since the uprising started in revolt against the regime of President Bashar al-Assad.

Tensions around Syria intensified last weekend after Syrian air defense forces shot down a Turkish fighter jet. Official Damascus insists the Turkish F4 phantom violated the country's border, while Ankara accuses Syria of downing its warplane in the international airspace.

Thousands of ethnic Armenians have left Syria amid the continuing violence in this Middle East country. Many of them have taken refuge in their ancestral home, Armenia.
