The regional assembly of the Armenian Revolutionary Federation-Dashnaksutyun (ARF-D) has condemned the tragic killing of Vahe Avetyan, the military doctor beaten to death during a scuffle at the Harsnaqar restaurant.
Considering the incident a challenge to the society and the Republic of Armenia, the assembly has called upon the authorities to properly evaluate the incident.
"The violence, the widespread violations of human rights, the impunity, permissiveness and cynicism that have become acceptable in all the sphere of our public and political life shake the foundations of a legal state, disrupt the society and degrade the dignity of the Armenian citizen, causing the pessimism-driven Armenian to seek his or her future beyond the borders of Armenia," it says in a statement.
Extending its condolences to Avetyan's relatives, the assembly calls for a political, legal and moral assessment on the tragedy, and proper accountability measures against the culprits.
Avetyan, who headed the ENT Department at Yerevan's Garrison Hospital, was severely beaten by the restaurant's security guards last Monday. He was subsequently hospitalized and underwent a surgery, but doctors didn't manage to save his life. Remaining unconscious for about fortnight, he died on Friday evening.
The owner of Harsnaqar is Ruben Hayrapetyan, a lawmaker of the ruling Republican Party, and the president of the Football Federation of Armenia (FFA).
