Yerevan=?UTF-8?B?4oCZ?=s Close Market is being dismantled; activists voice alarm

Photo by MediamaxAn Armenian civil initiative protesting against a decision to pull down the Close Market in central Yerevan warned on Sunday night that the market's roof is being dismantled.
In a statement, the group called Let's Save the Close Market has characterized the move as vandalism against the construction.
"Despite the officials' false allegations that the construction work has been suspended, the architectural monument suffered an irrevocable damage yesterday night, which was fixed by cameras," reads the statement.
The activists are organizing a gathering outside the market at 11:00 am Yerevan time, calling for an active participation to all those who are not indifferent to the market's future.
"Let's gather to discuss our plans for saving the market from vandalism," they say.
An incumbent lawmaker of the opposition Heritage party, Styopa Safaryan, and several Facebook activists have launched active discussions on the social networking site.
The market was earlier purchased by businessman MP Samvel Alexanyan who is reportedly planning to open a Yerevan City supermarket on the territory.
