Ex-road police chief convicted of embezzlement, jailed for six years

Colonel Margar Ohanyan, the former chief of the Armenian road police, has been sentenced to six years in prison in a high-profile corruption-related case heard by a court in Yerevan.

At the completion of his trial on Wednesday the judge cleared the former official of the charge of abuse of power also pressed by the prosecution, but found him guilty of large-scale embezzlement of public funds. Three other police officers prosecuted as part of the criminal case got off with suspended prison sentences.

Ohanyan was arrested and sacked last September in a criminal investigation into the alleged theft of more than 150 tons of fuel that was allotted to police patrol cars. The case against him was based on incriminating testimony given by the other defendants.
