Both Turkey and EU tired, European parliament president says

President of the European parliament Martin Schulz is paying today a two-day visit to Turkey.

One the eve of the visit, Schulz spoke with the German Der Tagesspiegel newspaper, expressing conviction that new President of France Francois Holland will promote the development of Turkish-French relations.

"The relations between the EU and Turkey cannot be agreed with the change of a government of a country. The process of Turkey's membership to the EU supposes Ankara making reforms, with the EU countries to decide to agree on Turkey's membership or not. Turkey has become tired of the process of reforms just like the EU countries did. With the change of power in Paris the process will not completely change," he said, adding that initially the ruling Justice and Development party implemented a number of reforms but in the second round certain issues came up.

"There is no real progress in the settlement of Kurdish issue," Schulz said.In response to Turkey's claims that during Cyprus' chairmanship in the European Union the relations will reduce to minimum, Schulz said, "It is not Turkey to decide who should chair the EU, it has no right to say that during the EU chairmanship of this or that country it will stop the negotiations," he said.
